Before you buy
8 questions
What is a travel eSIM?
A travel eSIM is a digital SIM with a prepaid data plan for another country or region. You install it on your phone by scanning a QR code, so there is no plastic SIM to collect or swap. Your own SIM stays in the phone. Read more in What is an eSIM?.
Will my phone work with a Spidot eSIM?
Your phone needs to support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Most recent iPhones, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones support eSIM. Dial *#06#: if you see an EID number, your phone supports eSIM. You can also check your phone before you buy.
How do I know if my phone is carrier-unlocked?
Phones bought outright are usually unlocked; phones on a contract may be locked to your carrier. Your carrier can tell you, and on most phones the network settings show whether another SIM is allowed. A locked phone cannot use a travel eSIM, so check before you buy.
Do I need an account to buy?
No. You only need an email address at checkout: the QR code and install details are sent there. Later you can sign in to My eSIMs with Google or an emailed link to see your eSIMs, data left and receipts.
Do Spidot plans include calls and texts?
Plans are data-only unless they are sold as Data + calls. With a data-only plan you can still call and message over the internet with apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime or Teams. See Data + calls plans for destinations that include them.
Do I get a local phone number?
Data-only plans do not come with a phone number for calls and SMS. Your own number stays on your own SIM, so you can keep receiving texts such as bank codes. See keep my number.
Which plan type should I choose?
Fixed data gives a set amount of data for a set number of days and suits most trips. Unlimited suits heavy daily use. No-expiry data stays on the eSIM until you use it, which suits several short trips. Compare them in which plan type or on all prices.
Should I buy a country plan or a regional plan?
If you stay in one country, a country plan is usually the simplest choice. If you cross borders, a regional plan such as Europe covers several countries with one eSIM. Each destination page lists the countries and plans available; see all destinations.
