What is an eSIM?

Updated 7 October 2026

An eSIM is a SIM that is built into your phone. Instead of putting in a plastic card, you scan a QR code and the plan is downloaded to your phone.

How it works

Most phones can hold several eSIMs alongside a physical SIM. You choose which line to use for calls, texts and mobile data.

A Spidot eSIM gives you mobile data in the country or region you buy it for. Your own SIM stays in your phone.

Why travellers use it

  • You can buy and install it before you leave.
  • There is no shop to find and no SIM card to swap.
  • Your own number keeps working for calls and texts.
